VILLAR VS. ROXAS in 2010
VILLAR VS. ROXAS in 2010

This early, two popular senators backed by strong political parties are now gearing for their presidential bids in the 2010 Philippine Presidential Elections.
Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II has been elected as Liberal Party president with the blanket authority to reorganize the party and appoint its new set of officers. This is said to be in preparation for his presidential bid in 2010.
Meanwhile, Senator Manuel “Manny” Villar, who is both Senate President and President of the Nacionalista Party, is also posturing for his own presidential bid in 2010.
Roxas is backed by a prominent political family background, and a high profile relationship with top female broadcaster Korina Sanchez. Roxas is part of the influential Roxas and Araneta clans. This early a number of his supporters have already started an online campaign via blogs.
On the other hand, Villar is a corporate magnate with virtually unlimited personal funding. Moreover, he was endorsed by popular celebrities such as Angel Locsin and Tessie Tomas during his last senatorial bid. He also seems to have the backing of his Tuesday group which includes Vice-President Noli de Castro, Senators Francis Pangilinan and Joker Arroyo, and Former Senator Ralph Recto.
While both have minimal involvement in major controversies and scandals, both also still have a lot to prove. Both are not strongly affiliated to either the administration or the opposition. While Villar seems to have the greater funding to run a well-oiled political machinery, Roxas’ Liberal Party seems to have more credibility. And while Villar enjoys the endorsement of media celebrities and politicians, Roxas has more charisma.
In 2010, it’s going to be a tight battle between these two. It would be interesting to see how two politicians with seemingly clean track records will survive and succeed in the dirty world of Philippine politics.
