I will surely get some flack with this one, but what the heck! Please DON’T VOTE for Manny Villar and Alan-Peter Cayetano!
These two has filed the bill that will make Hospitals liable for not releasing patients that were not able to settle their hospital bills. And with the "Domino Effect", will jeopardize the salaries of the people working in the hospitals which include, Nurses, training Doctors, staff etc. I know some people will say that I am biased since I am a Physician, but again, what the heck, besides, you can remove Doctors from the list since they may have their own other ways of earning, but how about those other health workers that rely on the hospital for their salaries? How about them?
Villar keeps on repeating on his answers that he really can’t do anything for the hospitals since it’s really "illegal" to "detain" patients that are unable to pay their dues. Then there are proponents that say that this is in continuance with equal opportunities in health care to the Filipinos and besides, patients can always sign a "promissory note" (which as we all know, is never followed). Ok, there should be equal privileges to all people when it comes to health care, but this should not be taken in general. Hospital workers and the hospital itself should earn and make a living. If this thing pushes thru, more hospitals will close, more people will lose their jobs and more people would opt to go out of the country thus increasing BRAIN DRAIN.
This contradicts the notion that we should create an environment that will convince health workers to stay in the country. The patients will always have the government hospitals to take care of them, they will have the same kind of expertise as with the private hospitals sans the comfort of course, as the doctors in these government hospitals are also the same doctors that they will see in private hospitals.
Why not make a law that will modernize the government hospitals? Because, this move is just a POGI move that would give their election bid a boost, which in the long run, the people are the ones that will suffer. These politicians does not have a problem with their hospital bills, they can afford it. But Juan Dela Cruz can’t, and when Juan Dela Cruz’s wife is pregnant, with this law, they can just walk up to St. Luke’s Medical Center, give birth there, stay for a week, in a suite and sign a "promissory note" before leaving and will never show up again. If 20 more Juan Dela Cruz’s wife does this, an eventual lay off and closure of the hospital will happen. And it will just bring us all to zero.
